Any area rug is cleaned right where it lies, silk or wool or hand-knotted Oriental, by a technician who reads its care code before anything else happens. Dry and back under the furniture in about an hour.
In Lookout Mountain, Georgia, the rug usually matters more than the carpet, and yours is cleaned on the floor it already lives on. Silk, wool and hand-knotted Oriental are each handled by their own care code, and rug work starts at a dollar a square foot. Carpet gets the same low-moisture clean, and the whole lot is walkable an hour or so later.
Getting up here
Rock City, at the top of the Georgia side, is a six-mile run from downtown Chattanooga. Those six miles take twenty minutes, because almost all of the distance is vertical. The crew comes up Ochs Highway or the Scenic Highway, GA-157, whichever one is moving that morning.
Up here the floor people most want looked after is usually a wool or Oriental rug rather than wall-to-wall synthetic. So the visit runs slower and more carefully than a carpet job: furniture lifted off, the pile dry-vacuumed in both directions, then a clean that leaves the foundation dry.
Call 423-284-0493, say roughly how big the rugs are and how many rooms have carpet, and we will walk you through what the visit involves and how long it takes. At the door our technician measures every room and every rug, reads every tag, and does not start until you say go. We finished 72 jobs in this market over the past 90 days, plenty of them on rugs nobody had trusted to a cleaner in years.
The town

This place was a resort before it was a town. It opened in the 1920s as Fairyland, and Rock City grew out of the same family's miniature golf. The Fairyland Club is still the social center of the mountain, Fairyland Elementary sits on Lula Lake Road, and say the brow and everyone knows you mean the rim-edge houses.
What that leaves behind, for us, is rugs. Wool, silk, hand-knotted pieces that have been in one family a long time and have never been cleaned by anyone who read the tag first. Our technician does. The care code on the rug decides the method before anything else happens: a W rug takes a water-based solution, an S rug takes a solvent-only clean, WS takes either, and an X rug gets a dry clean and nothing wet at all. Our low-moisture process is built to be safe on every one of those, which is why we can quote silk at the same rate as wool.
Now the part that catches out every cleaner who is not from here. This is the Georgia town, in Walker County, zip 30750. The other town of that name sits at the Tennessee end of this same ridge, with its own page on this site and a different sort of job. Crossing between them takes a few minutes and no thought at all. The mail, the schools and the taxes have never lined up.
The work
A rug up here is rarely a synthetic from a big-box store. It is wool, or silk, or a hand-knotted piece on a cotton foundation, and each of those wants a different hand. So our technician's first move is to read the care tag, and the second is to test a corner, before any solution goes near the pile.
Our low-moisture cleaning is safer for every one of those fibers than a soaking clean can be. A measured amount of solution works the soil loose at the base of the pile and lifts it out, instead of pushing it further down and leaving the foundation wet. The rug comes back damp, never soaked, and nothing sticky stays down in the pile for the next month of grit to cling to. Take that residue away and the rug keeps its look something like three times longer.
Then there is what gets walked in. Trail grit off the Rock City paths and the brow does real damage to wool. Taking it out dry comes first. The solutions that follow are non-toxic, mild enough for a house with children and dogs in it, and the technician applying them is on our own payroll.
A few things usually join the visit up here. Pet stain and odor treatment for the dogs that come back up those same paths, which gets down to where the odor actually is and carries our guarantee of 100% pet odor removal. Upholstery cleaning for porch furniture that has had a full summer of use. And protectant on the rugs that lie where everybody walks, so the next season of grit has nothing to work down into. Your technician talks any of it through at the door.
Before and after
The owner went through every before and after the company holds and kept these. All of them are our technicians' own photographs, taken on paying jobs, with nothing arranged and nothing bought from a library.

The rug work
Rugs typically run, on average, $1 to $2 a square foot, measured length by width, cleaned where the rug already lies. No rug of yours goes out the front door.
The in-home rug service starts with a dry pass through the pile, because the grit has to come out before anything wet touches wool. After that it is a low-moisture clean and a groom.
Carpet past the first three rooms typically runs $40 to $50 each, or around $50 to $100 for a big one. Stairs typically come to $40 to $50 a flight, a hallway around $20 to $30, and lanes that will not quite lift take a high-traffic treatment, typically $20 to $30 per room. Furniture goes by the piece, from $10 to $15 for a dining chair up to $240 and above for a sectional, with a sofa from $140, a loveseat from $110 and a recliner typically $40 to $50. Pet stain and odor treatment typically adds $30 to $40 a room, which puts a pet visit at around $149 to start, and protectant is typically $20 to $30 a room. Every figure is on the published price list, and online booking shows this week's open times.
Then the promise that matters most on a rug somebody left you. Love the clean or it's free. Say so before the van heads back down the mountain and you pay nothing for that visit, a line that sits on the written quote right beside the price.

That tacky feeling is detergent the machine couldn't rinse back out. It dries inside the fiber and stays there, and sticky fiber grabs the next soil that walks through the door.
In the room the rug is already lying in. Nothing gets rolled up and carried out to the van. We lift the furniture off it, dry-vacuum the pile from both directions to take the grit out of the base of the wool, then clean it flat on the floor it lives on. A nine-by-twelve measures 108 square feet, so at a dollar a square foot that rug starts around $108. The furniture goes back before our technician leaves.
Yes. The fiber does not change the rate, so silk, wool, a hand-knotted Oriental and a machine-made hall runner are all priced the same way: length times width, starting at one dollar for every square foot. What the fiber does change is the method, and our technician decides that by reading the tag, not by looking at the price list. An 8 by 10 works out at around $80, which lands under the $99 every visit starts at, so one small rug on its own starts at $99. Add it to a carpet visit and it simply joins the written total instead.
Not if it was never soaked, and we do not soak one. Our process uses a measured amount of solution, enough to release the soil from the bottom of the pile and bring it back out. The pile comes out damp to the hand, and nothing sticky stays behind in the fiber to hold a smell or catch the next month of grit.
It cuts. What walks into houses on this mountain is trail grit and dust off Rock City, the Lula Lake paths and the brow, and it is hard on wool. The grit sifts down to the base of the wool where a household vacuum cannot reach, and every step grinds it sideways against the fiber. Taking it out dry, before a drop of solution goes down, is the part of the visit that actually saves the rug.
Georgia. This is the City of Lookout Mountain in Walker County, Georgia, zip 30750, which covers Fairyland, Fleetwood Drive, Lula Lake Road and the brow. A second town carries the same name at the Tennessee end of the same mountain, and it has its own page on this site. People cross between the two all day without thinking about it, while the mail, the schools and the taxes refuse to agree. We work in both, at one set of prices, and 423-284-0493 will sort out which side your house sits on.
Nearby
Our vans cross the state line every working day, so a Georgia address changes nothing about the price or the schedule. The Tennessee town of the same name is a few minutes north along the top of the mountain. Rossville sits at the bottom on the valley floor, and Flintstone is below the eastern brow. It is all one day's route around Chattanooga, one of 29 towns we run to.
