Up on Signal Mountain, the Stairs Get Cleaned First

Three rooms and 450 square feet go on one visit, and the staircase is where we start. The house is dry about an hour after we leave, so the children go up those same stairs to bed that evening.

The straight answer

Twenty minutes up 127, gear and all

LocalPro cleans carpet in Signal Mountain houses with a low-moisture process that takes three rooms and 450 square feet of floor in a single visit. US-127 from downtown Chattanooga is twenty minutes or so, and the climb is what eats the clock. Every rug and sofa has its own code checked before we settle on how to handle it.

The conversation about money happens once, at your door, and then it is finished. Our technician measures the rooms, counts the flights, notes which treads have taken the worst of the trail grit, and writes the total down before the first machine comes inside, so nothing is added while we work. The table further down this page carries every line that could appear on it.

Call 423-284-0493 and say how many bedrooms are upstairs and how many flights the house has, and you get a straight answer on that call. If typing suits you better, the online booking page shows what is open this week and the published price list holds the rest.

Our Promise

If the clean doesn't satisfy you, the visit is free.

Not a credit toward next time. Not a manager who stops returning calls. Tell us what fell short, we come back and redo it at no charge, and if it still isn't right, we tear up the invoice and you owe nothing.

What the job actually is up here

Grit off the trails, carried up a carpeted staircase

Shackleford Ridge Park opens straight into eighteen miles of interconnected trail that loops on into Prentice Cooper State Forest. Signal Point Park is the southernmost trailhead of the Cumberland Trail. Rainbow Lake is a short walk off Ohio Avenue near Alexian Village.

None of those are places you load the car for. They sit at the ends of streets where families live, and that is the thing about this town no other place near it can copy. A kid comes off the trails and leaf litter, crosses a driveway, and goes straight up a carpeted staircase to a carpeted bedroom. The dog and the mountain bike take the same route ten minutes behind.

So the call we get from this mountain is rarely a spill in a dining room. It is ground-in grit on the stair treads and two dark lanes running the length of the upstairs hall. Trail grit is sharp, it settles to the base of the pile where a household vacuum cannot reach it, and it saws at the fiber every time somebody walks over it.

Our low-moisture carpet cleaning pulls that back out without soaking anything. Nothing sticky is left down in the pile afterwards to grab the next load of sand. Carpet cleaned this way stays clean roughly three times as long as it would after a soapy clean.

How the staircase gets done

Two stories, one process, dry before bedtime

Most of the houses we work in on the mountain have the bedrooms upstairs, so the staircase and the landing carry every trip of the day. That is the floor we start on, and it is the floor the low-moisture process was made for, because nobody wants a wet staircase between the kitchen and the children's rooms at eight in the evening.

Each tread is worked by hand at the nose where the grit collects, then the landing and the upstairs hall get the same pass the rooms do. The soil is lifted up and out of the pile rather than pressed down toward the backing. The whole house is walkable in about an hour.

Where furniture joins the ticket, the care tag decides the handling. W, S, WS or X: our technician reads it before opening anything, a solvent-only fabric gets solvent, and a delicate piece gets the gentlest version of the process. The code sets the method. It never changes what you were told at the door.

The people on the stairs are on our payroll, and we trained them on the equipment they carry up 127. What goes down on your floor is mild enough for a household with small children and a dog in it. If a flight or a room disappoints you when it dries, we go over it again before we leave, and if it still is not right the visit is free.

Plain numbers

Stairs, rooms and upholstery, each on its own line

Three rooms and 450 square feet start at $109, and every other part of the job stands on its own line below, so the staircase, the rooms and the furniture are all in front of you before you decide.

WorkStarting at
Three rooms, 450 sq ftfrom $109
Stairs, per flighttypically $40 to $50
Hallway or landingtypically $20 to $30
Additional roomtypically $40 to $50
Large roomtypically $50 to $100
High-traffic treatment, per roomtypically $20 to $30
Loveseat / sofa / sectionalfrom $110 / from $140 / from $240
Recliner / dining chairtypically $40 to $50 / $10 to $15
Mattress, twin / queen / kingfrom $100 / from $140 / from $180
Area rugs, per square foot, cleaned in the housefrom $1
Pet stain and odor, per roomtypically $30 to $40
Any visit, whatever the room countfrom $99

Most houses on this ridge book the three rooms, then add a flight and the upstairs hall, which is the part carrying the real load. If the dogs sleep on the sofa, upholstery cleaning joins the same visit and the same sheet of paper, and pet stain and odor treatment can go on the same ticket, taken room by room with a 100% pet odor removal guarantee behind it.

In-home rug cleaning begins with the code on the label, whatever the rug is made of, so a wool one, a silk one and a hand-knotted Oriental each get the handling their own code calls for. We work on them where they lie, in the room they live in, and nothing is carried off the property.

Where we work

Roads we work up here

Signal Mountain Boulevard, US-127, is how we come and go. The W Road carries three hairpin switchbacks tight enough that drivers stop and look before turning, and it drops off the ridge to Mountain Creek Road. Anderson Pike is the old toll road across the ridge.

Off those run the streets we are actually parked on: James Boulevard, where Thrasher Elementary sits and the original trolley stop is preserved. Shackleford Ridge Road, with Nolan Elementary, and Sam Powell Trail, where the middle and high school is. Kentucky Avenue, where the Mountain Arts Community Center has stood since 1926, when it opened as Signal Mountain Grammar School.

The whole town is one ZIP code, 37377, shared with Walden, Fairmount and Lone Oak, and all of it sits inside our Hamilton County routes. The drive up is an ordinary part of our week, not a special trip somebody has to be talked into.

Stays cleaner 3× Longer between cleanings on average vs. a soapy conventional clean

Ever had carpet turn sticky a week after a cleaning?

That tacky feeling is detergent the machine couldn't rinse back out. It dries inside the fiber and stays there, and sticky fiber grabs the next soil that walks through the door.

✓Nothing sticky left behindOur low-moisture process uses a fraction of the water and leaves the fiber clean and bare, so there's no soapy film for dirt to cling to.
✓Stays cleaner about 3× longerOn average, carpet cleaned our way holds its look about three times longer between visits than carpet left with detergent residue in it.
✓No re-soiling a month laterThe gray path that reappears a few weeks after a cleaning is almost always residue pulling soil back. Take the residue away and it stops happening.
✓Dry in about an hourA fraction of the water means no soaked carpet and no box fans running all evening. Furniture, kids and dogs are back on it the same afternoon.

Questions from mountain households

Do the van and the gear come up the W Road?

We come up Signal Mountain Boulevard, US-127, because that is the road built for a working vehicle. The W Road is posted against anything longer than 22 feet, and its three hairpin turns are no place to find out how long a van really is. Our low-moisture equipment is compact and it rides up 127 with us every week. Where you sit on the ridge changes nothing about the job: the same three-room visit, the same trained technician, and the same guarantee as at the bottom of the hill.

How do you get trail grit out of a stair tread?

Sand works its way to the base of the pile at the nose of the tread, where every foot lands, and a household vacuum never reaches it. We dry-vacuum the treads first to take the loose grit off, then work solution into the face and the nose of each step by hand rather than running a machine down the flight. The worst lanes can take a high-traffic treatment on top of that, and our technician says at the door whether he thinks your treads will show it.

Can you clean the sofa the dogs sleep on at the same visit?

Yes, and on this mountain it gets added more often than not. A loveseat starts at $110, a sofa at $140 and a sectional at $240. A recliner is typically $40 to $50, and we open it out so the fabric down inside the hinge gets done. Pet stain and odor treatment typically adds $30 to $40 per room, that visit starts at $149, and the 100% pet odor removal guarantee stands behind it. One crew, one stop, one written total across the carpet, the stairs and the furniture.

Do you still come up 127 in icy weather?

When the mountain roads are clear, yes. When they are not, we phone you and move the time. Everybody up here has an opinion about which of the three ways down they will not take in ice, and we are not going to argue with yours. Moving an appointment costs nothing, and the total we agreed on holds exactly as it was written.

The sofa's tag says S, not W. Can you still clean it?

Yes, and the tag is the first thing our technician looks at. S means solvent only, W means water-based, WS takes either, and X means vacuum and no liquid at all, which we tell you plainly. Our low-moisture process is the safer option across all four because so little liquid goes into the fabric, and a solvent-only piece is handled the way its code says. The code changes the method, never the total, and that total is written down before the first cushion comes off.
