Carpet cleaning in Lupton City, one small room at a time
Lupton City went up as company housing for Dixie Spinning Mills, and a worker paid a dollar a room a week to live in it. The room was the unit, so the rooms are small and square and closed off from one another, and a day here is counted in setups. Each one gets its own careful pass.

Why the houses are shaped this way
A dollar a room a week, and the plan never moved on
The 1913 process that put a silk finish on cotton thread made the Dixie Mercerizing Company, and its backers set up Dixie Spinning Mills in 1922 to keep it in thread. Production began in 1923 north of the Tennessee River on a thousand acres, with 12,000 spindles turning. Two years later there were 30,000, and the houses had gone up beside them.
The company put up rows of them beside the mill, every one single story and let out by the room. That rent set the floor plan. The rooms are small, square and closed off from one another, doors opening onto a short hall, with no open living area anywhere in the building.
A hundred years later that is what we walk into, and it changes the shape of the work more than the cost of it. There is no long run to make time on. Each room is its own setup: shift the bed, clean eight or ten feet, break down, move next door. Four or five of those in a house you could cross in fifteen steps.

What the village asks of a clean
Old boards under the carpet, and why we keep the water out of it
Mill Street and the roads around it give us a cottage with carpet in every room and a closet floor behind each door, then, a block on, a low ranch with carpet in three. The technician walks what is actually carpeted, reads the fiber and the care label, and says at the door how each room is going to be worked.
Under a good deal of that carpet sit the original boards. That is the argument for a low-moisture clean here more than almost anywhere. Very little liquid goes into the pile, nothing sits damp against the backing overnight, and there is no slow drying-out for a board to cup or a seam to lift in. An hour after we pack the van the front room is yours again.
The deeper clean matters at least as much as the speed. What makes a room look tired is grit sitting at the base of the fiber where a vacuum stops reaching. Lifting it up and out is why a carpet we have cleaned holds its look about three times longer.
What a finished room looks like
Before and after, off our own jobs
The owner sat down with every before and after our technicians have taken and kept a short list. These are among them. Real houses, real customers, photographed by the technician who cleaned the floor, and some of them a good drive from Mill Street.

Getting in the door
Concrete sidewalks the company poured, and nowhere to pull in
The mill poured concrete walks through the village along with the houses, and they are still how you reach most front doors. There are no attached garages and few real driveways, so the van takes a space on the street and the gear walks in from there.
Small rooms also mean a lot of area rugs. Every one of them gets the same careful handling whatever it is made of, wool or silk or an Oriental handed down through the family, and every one is cleaned on the floor it already covers, so nothing is carried out to the van. More sits on our page for rug cleaning done inside the house.
Dogs are common on these blocks, and a closed-up room holds a smell longer than an open plan does. Pet stain and odor treatment settles the cause. It is gentle enough for a cottage the dog still lives in, and a 100% pet odor removal guarantee covers how it turns out.
How people give directions
- The old mill site, now being turned back into a meadow of native plants
- Mill Street
- Fairfax Heights
- Manchester Park
The post office closed for good on 18 July 2009 and people still place addresses by where it stood. Say you are near the mill site and we will know the block.
Before the gear comes in
What a mill-house visit covers, room by room
Three of those small rooms start at $109 between them, provided the carpet in them totals 450 square feet or less. The fourth room, the hall, the rare flight of stairs on a street of single-story houses: each of those gets counted at the door, by a technician with his feet on the very floor in question.
Extras get named and explained before anyone agrees to them. The strip between the front door and the hall usually wants a pass of its own, since every room in the cottage empties onto it. Protectant makes the next year's soil slower to take hold, and a sanitizer pass clears a room that has picked up a smell. Furniture is worked piece by piece once the tag under the cushion has been read, and the whole of it sits on the upholstery page.

Four questions we get from Lupton City
Why does a five-room mill house take about as long as a bigger place across the river?
Because the day is counted in setups rather than square feet. A mill cottage gives us small square rooms off a short hall, so we move the bed, clean eight or ten feet of floor, break the gear down and start again next door. A newer house with one open plan is a single long pass. The price sheet does not change for it: from $109 for three rooms, then typically $40 to $50 for each room after.
Will the machine fit through doorways this narrow?
It will. Everything is carried in by hand and around corners, which keeps original door casings and trim unmarked. These cottages were let by the room, so the doorways are narrow and the hall is short, and the gear gets broken down and set up again in each room. Very little water goes into the pile, so there is nothing sitting on old boards afterwards either.
Does 37351 get the same price list as the rest of the city?
The same one, to the dollar. Lupton City has a post office and ZIP code of its own, and it changes nothing about what a job costs: from $109 for three rooms, typically $20 to $30 for a hallway, starting at $1 a square foot for any area rug, cleaned on the floor it already covers. Every visit starts at $99. Lupton City is 6.1 miles from downtown Chattanooga, about thirteen minutes out Hixson Pike.
