Carpet cleaning in St. Elmo, where the dirt arrives on foot

St. Elmo carpet cleaning is low-moisture work, run by technicians we train and employ ourselves. On these avenues under the Incline the front door usually sits a long climb above the curb, and what gets walked in over the porch settles into the carpet a teaspoon at a time. The floor here gets walked dull long before it ever gets stained, and the work is about lifting that soil back out.

The rule that shapes the work

Local historic zoning means you cannot design the dirt away

St. Elmo is a local historic district, and the commission that reviews exterior work gets specific about porches, porch floors, steps and walkways. The path to the front door stays wood and stays narrow whatever it carries indoors, so an owner on Alabama Avenue has one fewer option than somebody in a subdivision east of town.

That leaves one lever, and it is cleaning done well. Our low-moisture carpet cleaning leaves a fraction of the moisture in the carpet that a soapy wet clean would, lifts the soil clear of the pile, and leaves nothing sticky behind to pull the next week's grit in. The floor is back in use about an hour after we pack up.

Nothing that comes off the van is toxic; it is mild enough to use in a house with a baby crawling on the floor and a cat asleep on it. The technician reads the care tag on any rug or runner in the house before he opens a bottle. Those two things do not change from one avenue to the next.

What comes over the threshold

A long walk up from the street, and a lane that shows it

On most of this grid the front door stands a good way up from the sidewalk, and the steeper lots on the west side of Tennessee Avenue make it a proper climb. Every one of those steps gets walked twice a day, and grit comes across the wooden porch and over the threshold on the sole of a shoe. It never arrives as a spill somebody can point at. It comes a teaspoon at a time and settles into the lane between the front door and the kitchen.

The common call on these avenues is not a stain at all. It is a lane gone one shade darker than the carpet either side of it. That grit sits at the base of the pile where a vacuum cannot reach, and a soapy pass tends to spread it rather than lift it. It has to be worked back up from the bottom, and that takes time.

A high-traffic pass over the worst lane is the extra we suggest here more than any other, because it works the grit out of the base of the pile. The technician shows you the lane before and after.

The streets we are on most

  • St. Elmo Avenue
  • Alabama Avenue
  • Tennessee Avenue
  • Virginia Avenue
  • Florida Avenue · Beulah Avenue
  • W. 40th through W. 57th, which cross all of them

People give directions by the Incline's lower station at 3917 St. Elmo Avenue, by Thankful Memorial church on West 43rd Street, or by the 1906 school building at W. 47th.

Where the carpet actually is

Rugs, runners and bedrooms, and the tag that decides the method

On St. Elmo, Alabama and Tennessee Avenues the work is usually a rug, a bedroom and a staircase rather than a house full of wall-to-wall. Further along Alabama Avenue and on the numbered streets that cross it, carpet tends to run through more of the plan, and that is a straightforward three-room visit plus the hall.

The rug is where a trained technician earns the visit. The label goes first. A wool piece coded for solvent gets solvent, a synthetic coded W gets a water-based clean, a WS tag leaves the choice open, and anything marked X is treated as the most fragile thing in the house. Low moisture sits comfortably inside all of that, and the plan for each piece is spoken out loud before work starts.

Wool, silk and Oriental all get the same unhurried handling whatever the fiber turns out to be. All of it happens on your own floor, in the room the rug already sits in, and nothing of yours goes out the door. The method is on the in-home rug cleaning page. A rug just inside an entry at the top of a long climb takes a beating no bedroom rug ever sees.

The other calendar

A national attraction empties into a residential street grid

An entry-hall rug cleaned in place on a St. Elmo job

The Lookout Mountain Incline Railway has run since 1895, and its lower station has stood on St. Elmo Avenue ever since. The little commercial block beside it was put up to serve visitors. Guest lodging on these residential blocks is a real part of the street, and a guest room turns over far more often than a family bedroom does.

That work runs on somebody else's clock. A room has to be finished, dry and made up between one checkout and the next arrival. Low moisture is what makes that gap workable. Our hours are Mon-Sat, 8 AM to 6 PM, and we are closed Sunday, so tell us the two times and we will slot in between them.

Dogs come up the mountain as well. Pet stain and odor treatment works on the whole spread of an accident, and a 100% pet odor removal guarantee goes with it. On a room about to be photographed or handed to a stranger, the guarantee is the part owners ask about first.

What the visit does for the lane

A long climb in, and a lane brought back

Three rooms start at $109, and 450 square feet of carpet is what that takes in. Anything beyond it, another bedroom, the hall, a flight of stairs, is walked and talked through with you on the spot, and the worst lane is left till last so it can be worked slowest. With no soap film left down in it, that lane holds its look about three times longer. None of it begins until it is written down and you have said go.

Call 423-284-0493 with your room count, or text 423-284-0493 a picture of the lane by the front door and you will hear back on what that lane needs. Love the clean or it's free, and that sentence has to hold up on a street where everyone knows everyone.

Our own work

The carpet as we found it, and as we left it

These are ours. A technician took each one on a live job, before anything was opened and again at the end, and the owner chose which ones earned a place on the site. Nothing staged, nothing bought in.

St. Elmo questions we get asked at the door

Does the Historic Zoning Commission have any say over what happens inside the house?

No. Local historic zoning reviews the outside of a building: porches, porch floors, steps, staircases, driveways, paving and walkways. What sits on your floor is entirely yours. Our gear comes through the front door by hand, nothing gets clamped to a porch post or fed through a window, and the porch is left the way we found it. The technician doing all that is our own employee, trained by us, never a subcontractor sent in our name.

What does a long walk up from the street leave in the carpet?

Grit, and it is abrasive. On the steep lots along the west side of Tennessee Avenue the front door sits well above the curb, and every trip up crosses wooden steps and a wooden porch floor before it reaches the threshold. That grit settles to the base of the fiber and cuts it from underneath, which is why a walking lane goes dull long before anyone would call it dirty. We take it out slowly and from underneath, and a high-traffic pass over that lane afterwards is what stands the pile back up.

Do you clean a wool rug differently from the wall-to-wall in the next room?

Yes, and the difference starts with the tag. Wall-to-wall carpet is usually a synthetic that takes the standard low-moisture clean. A wool or silk rug carries its own care code, and if the tag says solvent only, solvent is what it gets, never a water-based cleaner. The technician reads it before anything is opened and explains the handling at the door. Either way the rug stays in the room it already sits in and is worked flat where it lies, and low moisture is the safer process on every one of those codes.

Can a room by the Incline station be cleaned between two overnight guests?

Yes, and it is a regular booking for us on St. Elmo Avenue. The process leaves so little moisture behind that the room is dry in about an hour and can be made up the same morning. Tell us the checkout time and the next arrival and we will fit the visit between the two. If a dog stayed in the room, the pet treatment behind it carries a 100% pet odor removal guarantee.
