Carpet cleaning in Riverview, where the grit is sand

The golf course in the middle of this neighborhood has held the same ground since 1896, and sand is what rides home on shoes here. Sand abrades carpet rather than soiling it, so a job on these streets opens with a long dry pass, worked by one of our own trained technicians.

The thing that is different here

Sand does not sit on a carpet. It sinks, and then it cuts.

Close view of carpet fibers on a Riverview job, cleaned after a full dry pass

Sand is heavier and sharper than the soil most houses see. It travels down to the bottom of the pile and settles, and from then on every footfall drags it across the fiber like a file. Carpet in a house beside the course holds up for years and then gives way all at once.

So the order of the visit matters more on these blocks than the solution does. We work the lane dry first, slowly and in more than one direction, and take everything loose out of the base before a drop of moisture touches the floor. Water on sand is the mistake: it glues the grit into place where nothing can reach it.

The clean itself is ordinary: one low-moisture carpet cleaning pass with non-toxic solution that is safe around children and pets, walkable again in about an hour. A lane that has already gone dull normally wants the high-traffic treatment on top, worked until the pile stands up again.

Floors people mean to keep

What it takes to bring a worn lane back

Riverview is a neighborhood where people keep a floor and bring a worn lane back, and that changes what a good clean has to do. It has to get down under the pile and bring the grit back up, without soaking the fiber.

That is the work our process is built for. Trained technicians, on our own payroll and never subcontracted, walk the rooms first and read the care tag on any rug or sofa before a bottle is opened. Low moisture is the safer method on every cleaning code, from a W-coded synthetic to a solvent-only wool piece, and it is what lets us clean a good rug in place.

The result is the point. Soil lifted up and out leaves nothing sticky behind, so the carpet stays cleaner about three times longer than a soapy clean would leave it.

How people place an address

English street names, and a club at the end of the old trolley line

Dorchester, Falmouth, Hanover, Dartmouth, Lexington, Concord, Devonshire, Sterling: the street names read like a map of somewhere else. Directions still get given by the club at the end of what used to be the trolley line, or by the sign toppers the neighborhood association put up along its own edges.

Give us one of those streets and a room count and we will say what that floor is up against. The technician who walks it with you is the one who does the work.

The sofa gets the same attention as the floor. Before anything is opened the technician reads the tag, matches the method to the code, W, S, WS or X, and explains at the door how the piece will be handled. Nothing we use is toxic, and the cushions are back in use the same afternoon.

What gets booked on these streets

Entry, hall, first flight, in that order

A wool entry rug cleaned on the floor it already lies on, in an older Riverview house

A golf bag goes out and comes back twice a week from April into October, and it has been doing that on this ground for a century and a quarter. The line it leaves stops roughly where the household stops walking in shoes. Three rooms start at $109, with 450 square feet allowed across them, and past those the hall and the flight of stairs are looked at on their own, because the first tread and the six feet inside the door carry more sand than any bedroom in the house.

Rugs are the other half of the work. A wool piece, a silk one and an Oriental are each worked at the pace they need, with the cleaning code checked first, and we do it where they lie in the room they already live in. No rug of yours ends up on a van. How that goes is laid out on the in-home rug cleaning page, and a rug just inside a front door on Falmouth takes more sand than anything else in the building.

Sofas and chairs can join the same appointment, and that side of the work sits on the upholstery page. Nothing is unloaded until you have approved the plan for the house on paper, and love the clean or it's free. Call 423-284-0493 with a room count, or send a photo of the lane to 423-284-0493 and we will reply the same day with a plan for it.

Before and after

A tired lane, and the same lane once the technician was done

These belong to our own crews. Each one was taken on a paying customer's floor by the person who cleaned it, and the owner picked them out himself. The process behind every frame is the one described further up this page.

Riverview questions, answered before you book

What does bunker sand do that ordinary house dirt does not?

Dirt rides on top of the pile and comes away with suction. Sand is heavier and angular, so it drops to the base of the carpet fibers and settles there, and every step afterward drags it sideways across the fiber. The damage is mechanical rather than a stain. A lane goes dull without anything on it ever looking like a spill. We take the sand out dry first, before any moisture goes down.

Why does the dry work come before anything wet on these floors?

Because wet sand stops moving. Put moisture down first and the grit binds into the base of the carpet where suction can no longer reach it, and it keeps cutting from underneath. On a house near the course a real share of the visit goes on dry passes, worked in more than one direction, with the entry and the first flight taking the longest. The low-moisture clean that follows is dry in about an hour.

The hall looks worn rather than dirty. Is that something cleaning fixes?

Part of it, and we will tell you which part before we start. Pile that has been crushed and packed with grit usually recovers further than people expect once the sand is gone and the fibers stand up again. Fiber that has genuinely been cut does not grow back, and you hear that at the door. Where it is worth doing, the worst lane gets a high-traffic treatment worked over it once the general clean is done.

When in the golf season should a house on the course get this done?

Either side of it. Play runs hard from April into October, so a visit in late March sets the floor up for the season and one in November takes the season back out of it. A good many families on Riverview Road do both and skip the middle. We are out Monday to Saturday, 8 AM till 6 PM, and shut on Sunday, so name the two dates and they get booked together.
